Nyepi Day in Bali

If you are new about Bali, you may be wondering what exactly that phrase means. Nyepi means “Day of Silence”, it is Bali’s Lunar New Year Day. The day of silence, fasting and meditation. This year falls in March the 7th.

The celebration of Nyepi day is the opposite side of Chinese New Year. As for Chinese New Year, the celebration are always like a legend, with noisy firecrackers, dragon dance, etc. Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection, quiet, no fire or no light, no working and no activities. A total silence for the whole Bali Island, start from 6 am until the next morning at 6 am. There will be no in or out flight, for Domestic or International, as Bandar Ngurah Rai Airport will be close on the Nyepi Day as well.

Nyepi is the most important time of year in Bali, whom majority are Hindu. But although Nyepi is a Hindu Holiday, in Bali, for non-hindu or even tourist are obligate to do the day of silence as well, to respect the citizens. For whom are already in Bali, we are still free to do as we wish inside our hotels or private villas in Bali, but are not allowed to go out to streets or beaches.
